The link below allows you to explore a collection of approximately 3500 photos taken on the British Graham Land
Expedition of 1934-1937. These are from the Polar Museum in Cambridge, where a similar collection can be
explored using the ViziQuest system on a touchscreen interface.
You will be presented with a montage of photos and movie clips. The demonstration starts with an extract from
a movie film made at the time of the expedition, another 54 extracts from this movie will be gradually unearthed as
you work your way through the whole collection.
The central image is surrounded by RELATED images, those most
closely related and a few only tenuously related.
If you select (mouse click) one of the surrounding images, this will move to the centre and the screen fills with
a new set of images - those related to the new central image.
By selecting further images of interest, you will gradually explore the whole collection based entirely on your
personal interest.
Selecting the "i" button reveals the textual description that is stored along with each photo.
As well as the photos and movie extracts, you will also gradually unearth approx 25 diary extracts with the text read
by actors. These are represented by a photo of the front cover of one of the actual dairies.
ViziPlay modules are educational extensions to the visual semantic browsing system. ViziPlay II allows students
to create a story from 10 photos selected using the semantic browser, then create an interactive comic strip
that includes a number of audio effects.
